The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia’s Forensic Practice Group (FPG) strives to prepare the defense community to understand, utilize, and challenge forensic science in court. FPG puts on an annual conference to educate on relevant forensic science topics.

This year’s conference is focused on evolving
our understanding of trace and so-called “touch” DNA.  Join us as we tackle DNA transfer and demystify probabilistic genotyping to better advocate for clients in criminal cases. We aim to provide strategies for challenging the evidence pre-trial as well as incorporating the DNA evidence into our defense theories at trial.

DNA testing has become so sensitive that it can be used to detect a handful of cells.  At the same time, labs are rolling out software that purportedly can untangle mixtures of DNA from multiple individuals; as such, samples that previously produced uninterpretable results are now producing seemingly damning conclusions. We will explore this new software and how to confront it in your cases.  We will also delve into issues of DNA transfer: no amount of fancy software can tell us how the DNA got there, and both scientific literature and real life examples demonstrate how easily our DNA can transfer to objects we never touched.

Join us on July 13th at Arnold & Porter, LLP to learn more, with opportunities to practice what you learn in small group sessions! Check in will begin at 9 a.m. with a light breakfast, and lunch will also be provided.  D.C. CJA CLE credit will be offered. Must be registered to attend.

If you have any questions regarding the conference or require special accommodations, please contact Jessica Willis at or at 202.824.2369.
